Society of Illustrators Visit
My trip to the society of illustrators I saw the drawing of Gahan Wilson's painting "Werewolf Waiting in Veterinary Office" is a interesting and creative piece of art that is captivating in its use of color with it being black and white and overall simply and why I like it so much. The painting is a masterful example of Wilson's unique style, which combines elements of humor and its comparison on how people might be nervous on to go to a doctors visit and now a wolf is nervous and scared to go to the vet. One of the reasons why "Werewolf Waiting in Veterinary Office" is so good and my favorite is because of the way that Wilson has used color to create a mood and atmosphere that is both eerie and unsettling but also can be funny or humorous to other people. Another reason why the painting is so effective is because of its composition. The placement of the werewolf in the chair and how he's sweating and looks nervous and not exited at all , creates a sense of tension and anticipation, as if something is about to happen. The chairs with other people in the waiting room behind the werewolf with their pets and you can see how how the pets are clam and the wolf looks like the only one that is nervous add to this sense of expectation. Finally, the subject matter of the drawing is both familiar and unexpected. We are all familiar with the idea of a veterinarian's office, but the presence of a werewolf waiting there is both unexpected and unsettling. This creates a sense of cognitive dissonance that is at the heart of Wilson's work, as he takes familiar images and turns them on their head, forcing us to see them in a new and different light. In conclusion, "Werewolf Waiting in Veterinary Office" is a great drawing because of the way that it combines how it has no color at all and simple it looks how it could've been made by pencil or a marker but yet sends the message the drawing is giving , and subject matter to create a world that is both familiar and strange. Wilson's unique style and approach to horror and humor make this painting a standout example of his work.
